My husband went in for lower back surgery and was transferred to ICU after surgery to monitor his sleep apnea. He was drowsy but, up and talking to friends and family on the phone. He was eating ice chips and was on a liquid diet. He was able to tolerate it well. Things immediately went downhill the first night. I asked everyone to please call me at home with any changes of my husbands condition, I was reassured many times, he would be fine and I will receive a call during the night if there was any changes with him. I had my cell phone close to me all night. There were no calls throughout the night that led me to believe he had a good night. Then in the morning before the nurses' shift was over; she calls me to inform me my husband had a really bad night and that they were trying to decide if they should intubate him or not. They asked, for me to come over and try to keep him awake all day and inform any of his visitors to do the same. What they didn't tell me is that my husband acquired high levels of deadly CO2. When I arrived, he was limb, he didn't have the strength to lift up his hands or let alone stay awake. He was unable to feed himself and hold a conversation. His stomach was so distended. When I would ask questions on what happened? The nurses and staff response was he had a reaction to the anesthesia and his sleep apnea is contributing to his condition. One night; the respiratory therapist came in to monitor him and immediately noticed, he was on a Bipap machine instead of a CPAP. Not to mention; the settings were at 30 something. He had accumulated all this deadly Co2 in his body and was being overlooked. The nurses and staff had excuses for every question I asked. Once, the Bipap was changed out to a Cpap; he immediately started relaxing and breathing better. He had a good night and was alert the next morning. They immediately transferred him to the spine unit and was discharged from there with no orders. When asked, how could this happen? No response.
